Man of Steel vs. the Fanboys

Look, up in the sky! It's a Bird It's a Plane! No, it's .....a community of fanboys and Internet movie critics who are more pissed off than they were when Superman Returns  was released! Kal El may no longer be a deadbeat dad, but that hasn't stopped the hordes of outraged fans of DC's iconic superhero from wanting to shove a hunk of Kryponite up director Zack Snynder's ( Watchmen , 300 ) and screenwriter David S. Goyer's collective asses. From Jesu Otaku's rant on Twitter and Brad Jones and the Walker Bros. bashing the movie, people are not thrilled with the final product. Mixed reviews should indicate that Warner Bros., and DC Entertainment, still scrambling to deliver their answer to Marvel Studios superhero team up The Avengers with the long-awaited Justice League movie, would have a serious problem getting a second sequel off the ground, especially with the polarizing views on how the Snyder/Goyer project worked out. Nope! Man of Steel has made ba...

Mr. Brown Verses The Movies of May

Now that I'm out of school for the summer, I can turn my attention to the summer movie season that I have purposefully neglected for the sake of my studies. We're about halfway through it, and wow, I have never been this disappointed by the crop of blockbusters that have come out, and no other month but May has illustrated this trend. Sure, there are a few good ones, but for the most part, it's been good, but not great and just plain bad.  June has so far bucked this trend, bringing out This Is the End , the summer best film far and away, and the criminally underrated Man of Steel , both films which will be review this week. For now, here's the "Meh" of May. Looking over a dead creature, or over the corpse of M.Night's career? You be the judge. After Earth - Here's the good news: M. Night Shyamalan's science fiction flick about a father and son (played by real-life father and son duo Jaden and Will Smith) fighting for survival after ...

Mr. Brown Verses Michael Bay

I'm gonna keep this review short, because even after I saw  Pain and Gain over a month ago, thinking about everything that happened thought the 129-minute runtime still leaves me depressed and drained. This movie was made by and for the lowest common denominator who think black comedies like Fargo and Pulp Fiction could be enhanced with long scenes of cruel torture, pointless shots of women either looking sexy, being in the act of sex, or tantalizing customers at a titty bar (I'm not kidding: those are you female characters, people), half-assed attempts to duplicate the Coen Bros idiosyncratic characters and Tarantino's love of stylized, over-the-top violence and hypnotic dialogue; both without the concept of how Joel & Ethan never forget their character's humanity despite being nitwits, vacuous, ordinary Joe's and Jane's caught up in a no-win scenario or just plain evil people (Anton Chigur, anyone?), and QT's gift for writing engaging characters...

Star Trek Into Darkness

Dear Eileen, One month before your passing, our phone conversations varied among many topics, but they would, somehow, revert back to the science-fiction/fantasy genre. Granted, even before then, when we talked chatted on Facebook, the subject would return to the genre that made you a fangirl of said genre, from The Boy Who Lived and the Seven Realms, to Star Wars and Star Trek . Hell, I can't even remember how many times you you quoted the line where C-3PO tells Han that the chances of navigating through an asteroid field successfully was approximately three thousand seven hundred and twenty to one! (Damnit, now you've got me saying it!) Just before you passed, you continued to geek out over how you wanted to watch Star Trek Into Darkness, the big follow up to director J.J. Abrams' prequel of the original Trek movies. The other movies I was jazzed about seeing: Iron Man 3 , The Hangover Part III , Man of Steel - they didn't hold a candle to how badly you wanted to ...

Update

There's a ton of reviews I've been meaning to get to, including the entertaining Iron Man 3 , the tedious and cynical Pain and Gain , and the Die Hard knockoff, Olympus Has Fallen ; along with a new installment of The Netflix Files. The reason for my absence (besides school and midterms) has to do with the tragic passing of my friend and fangirl Eileen Turri. Eileen was the woman who introduced me to the wonders of Monty Python and the brilliance of British sketch comedy, in addition to being a dear and close friend, and a terrific writer (read what she did with the crazy series that she ran with, The Bentley Chronicles). She was a Star Wars and Harry Potter die-hard and I enjoyed talking movies with her. The big summer movie she was excited about seeing was Star Trek Into Darkness , the sequel to the 2009 reboot of the Trek franchise. Sadly, she won't get that opportunity to watch it. This weekend, I'll be watching J.J. Abram's sequel for the both of us.

Oblivion

Earth 2077. The planet is a wreck and now uninhabitable. Humanity has moved to colonize on Titan, one of Saturn's moons. The only things that are on the dying world is a mop-up crew that is tasked with doing the machine-like duty of collecting vital resources like water and plant life for......Wait a second....i'm explaining the plot of WALL-E ! Let's try this again..... In the distant future, a two-person crew live together and take orders from a machine that may be hiding a more sinister motive as to why......Sorry, that's another plot point from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 - A Space Odyssey , my mistake. Tom Cruise is Jack Harper, a man tasked with droid repairs for what feels to be a lifetime. Harper has this feeling that the life he knows may be a guise to blind him from what's really going on, as dreams (or memories?) of a world more before the destruction of the planet and the woman on top of the empire State Building in New York haunt him every night.....

Mr. Brown Verses Irritating Teen Bullshit

LOL  is shit. Just absolute, moronic, irritating shit. I talked about this movie in January back when I was reviewing my 10 worst list, but I really haven't gone into full detail about why this piece of shit landed the no.3 spot on my list of the most infuriatingly bad movies of the past year. By the way, you are reading the title correctly, that's the name of the movie. I fear that LMFAO, OMG!, and WTF?! aren't that far behind, as it goes to naming movies. It isn't just the name that I think is a lazy name for a movie title, it's everything else about this shallow, vacuous, obnoxious and pretentious coming of age teen drama that managed to piss me off, but i'm getting a bit ahead of myself. Before I talk about this movie, I have to mention that LOL  (God, that's annoying to say) is actually a remake of the 2008 French comedy called.... LOL (Laughing Out Loud) . I don't know anything else about that movie, but on IMDB, the film holds a fairly decent ...
